Zahira Sports Complex Donation 2023
A Million Rupees, and Trust the Rest Would Follow
At the Crescent Lights Dinner — a Zahira College OBA dinner — the conversation at the G9 table turned to the Sports Complex. Someone floated the idea of a contribution. A hundred thousand, maybe. Then each person around the table started putting their hand up with a number. The amounts kept coming. We reached out to a few batchmates who hadn't made it to the dinner that night. The pledges kept growing — and when we found ourselves approaching half a million, the table looked at each other and thought: why not go all the way?
We made the call. G9 would pledge a million rupees — and trust that the rest would follow.
The Zahira College Batch of 2009 formally presented a sponsorship cheque of LKR 1,070,000 towards the Zahira College Sports Complex. The presentation was graced by Mr. Triviiy Marikkar (Principal of Zahira College), Mr. Mohamed Shiraz (President of the OBA), and Mr. Alavi Mukthar (Member of the Board of Governors). The contribution was later recognised in press coverage by Ceylon Today.
